Common Health Problems of Children and Preventive Medicinal Instructions A Instructional Event organized by the Pharmaceutical Association of Larissa

Members of the Pharmaceutical Association, institutes of the medical community and lots of citizens participated in an instructionalevent, which was held at the municipal art gallery of Larisa-Katsigra Museum, on the 25th of September, 2009, in the frame of the “BioEducation” program. The “BioEducation” program is being developed and implemented from the Municipality of Larissa in its area, during the last two years.

The scientific meeting had informative character, and was under the title “Common Health Problems of Health of Children and Preventively Medicinal Instructions”. Itwas organized by the Pharmaceutical Association of Larissa and it was the first of a series of scientific events of the rest of the year.

The President of the Pharmaceutical Association of Larissa Mr Ioannis Makrygiannis mentioned that the main aims of this program are:

Firstly, the education and the briefing of Pharmacists on HeathCare topics and secondly  the simplification of these scientific issues, so that they can be understood by the citizens.

”The constant education and training of the pharmacists and the citizens are the main aims of the program”, said Mr Ioannis Makrygiannis. Furthermore he thanked Olvos Science for its support, pointing out that without the company’s sponsoring and support, the event couldn’t have taken place. He also said that events like this, are important for the training and awareness on health issues and really innovative.

After the introduction by Mr Ioannis Makrygiannis, Mr Georgios Syrogiannopoulos, Professor in Pediatrics - Thessaly University, talked about the virus inflections and their treatment. He explained the way they are developed and pointed out the population more sensitive to be infected.

«Kids are affected more easily. Especially during the childhood, there’s a increase on respiratory viruses, which are also provoked by the abrupt season changes. As a first line treatment common antipyretics are suggested instead of antibiotics. Nowadays, parents tend to use more often than they should antibiotics, even without the subscription of the doctors. Greece is one of the first among European countries in the use of the antibiotics. The constant use of antibiotics leads to even more resistant microbes. Therefore we tend to use higher doses of medicines to eliminate them”.

Referring to the vaccines he said that we have to trust the new ones. He also talked about the vaccination children program, pointing out that it should be followed strictly and that it must be combined with other actions taken by the State.

“This way, a complete program of vaccinations in the closed demographic groups will be achieved”, he said.

Mrs VictoriaRoussaki, Professor in Dermatology - Thessaly University, spoke about common daily dermal problems, especially in pediculosis. As she said pediculosis is a common and very frequent problem especially during children age and until the puberty.

“During thepastfewyearsweobservethattheproblempediculosis affects thesmallchildren more often that before. One of the main reasons for this is the smooth climate of last years, the insufficient knowledge we have on this topic and the phenomenon of recontamination. The ways we can confront and reduce the possibility of a recontamination, is to follow the right treatment. The right treatment suggests that we take actions to eliminate not only the louse but also its eggs. Over and above we must strictly follow the directives of the medicines we use, along with some basic rules of hygiene, such as:

a) We must decontaminate the bed sheets, the clothes wear and all of the possible places and spots that can be used as a protection shelter for the lice. Its worth mentioning that when she’s not on the human body, the louse can’t survive more than 24 hours.

b) Clothes or other stuff (like wooden toys) that can be washed immediately must be sealed in plastic bangs for 8 days, at least.

c)  Furniture like the sofa or the car seats must be vacuumed carefully, since lice can penetrate them.

d) Hair brushes and combs must be decontaminated. We can do that by immersing them into ethanol for about one hour.

e) Finally all the family members should check themselves in a constant base, because this is the only way to avoid the recontamination.

Referring to the lice that the kids get from the other students, she pointed out that the only way to stop the transmition of the infection is for the parents to inform the school administration that their kid is contaminated.

MrNikolaosSitaras, Professor in Pharmacology- Athens University, spoked about the proper use of medicines and vitamins, during the childhood. “Medicines should be administered only when necessary. Our goal is to train the pharmacists to provide simple and explicit answers, in subjects like the side effects. We should aim to administer the right medicines, in the right doses, to the right patients”.

Mr Nikolaos Sitaras, also said that people should know that every single medicine has side affects. The five golden rules, the five R’s that  should be followed when a medicine is dispensed are the following:

1.    Choose the Right medicine,

2.    For the Right health problem,

3.    Provide the Right dosage,

4.    Provide it from the Right way of administration (oral use, nasal use, etc).

5.    Provide it to the Right patient. The administration of the medicines must be held according the special needs of each patient and the awareness of the fact that every patient has different needs.
